Creating a Things Bookmarklet

Last Updated: Jan 15, 2015 07:19PM CET

If you’re using Things on an iPad or iPhone with iOS 7 or earlier, you can create new to-dos from Safari using this bookmarklet.

If you’re using Things for Mac or Things on an iPad or iPhone running iOS 8 or later, you can learn how to create new to-dos from other apps on this page. The steps below are only necessary if you're using Things in iOS 7 or earlier.

We offer a way to quickly and easily send links to Things’ Inbox from any website you’re viewing on your iPad or iPhone running iOS 7 or earlier. To do this, you’ll need to create a special Javascript bookmarklet in your browser. Here’s how:

Mac

If you’re using iCloud to sync your bookmarks, you can make the bookmarklet on your Mac, which is a bit easier. It’ll then show up in the bookmarks on your iPad or iPhone, too. If you also have Things installed on those devices, you’ll be able to use it in your mobile browser to send links into Things’ Inbox.

Drag this button to Safari’s bookmarks bar above, and then rename it to “Send to Things”:

Click and drag this to the bookmarks bar

Now, when you’re on a webpage, just click the new Send to Things bookmark and Things will create a new to-do with a link to the page you’re on.

iPad
  1. First, select and copy this text to your iPad’s clipboard:
    Javascript:window.location='things:add?title='+encodeURIComponent(document.title)+'&notes=Visited%20on%20'+new%20Date().toDateString()+':%20'+encodeURIComponent(document.URL)

  2. Open the Safari app, and navigate to any webpage you like.
  3. At the top of the screen, tap the Share button (square box with an up-arrow).
  4. Tap Bookmark.
  5. Rename your bookmark to “Send to Things”.
  6. Make sure that Location is set to Favorites.
  7. Tap Save.
  8. At the top of the screen, tap the Bookmarks button (it looks like an open book).
  9. Tap into Favorites.
  10. Tap Edit.
  11. Tap into your Send to Things bookmark.
  12. In the address field, replace the URL with the text you copied to your clipboard in Step 1.
  13. In the top left of the pop-over, tap Favorites to go back.
  14. Tap Done to save your changes.
  15. Now navigate to any webpage you’d like to send to Things.
  16. Tap the new Send to Things bookmark in your favorites bar (note that if you have a lot of bookmarks in the bar, you may need to tap ••• to see more). (If you do not see your Favorites bar, you can turn it on in the iOS settings.)
  17. The bookmark will switch you over from Safari to Things, and place the new to-do in your Inbox.
  18. Tap OK.

If you’re using iCloud to sync your bookmarks, this new bookmark will automatically appear in the browser on your Mac and iPhone. If you also have Things installed on those devices, you’ll be able to use it in your browser to send links into Things’ Inbox from there.
