Customizing Things’ Windows

Last Updated: Jan 25, 2018 05:22PM CET

Learn how to customize the Things app window, and how to use multiple windows to work more efficiently.

Depending on what you’re doing, you might either want to focus solely on your tasks at hand, without the distraction of areas and projects in the sidebar, or you might want to see the bigger picture and work in several lists at once. Here’s how you can do both.

Slim Mode: Show and hide the sidebar

Mac
  1. On your Mac, open Things.
  2. With your mouse, hover where the sidebar meets the main app window.
  3. Grab the drag handle and pull it to the left to hide the sidebar.

To show the sidebar again, hove with your mouse at the left edge of the app window. When the drag handle appears, pull it to the right.

You can also use the keyboard shortcut ⌘ Cmd + / to show and hide the sidebar.

Tip: When you work with the sidebar hidden, you can still quickly switch lists. Either use Type Travel and just start typing the name of your list, or click the current list’s name in the title bar and select another list from the drop down.

iPad
  1. On your iPad, open Things.
  2. Tap and hold the drag handle and pull it to the left to hide the sidebar.

To reveal the sidebar again, tap and hold the drag handle and pull it to the right.

Open multiple Things windows

There are occasions when you will need to see more than one list at once, for example during your weekly review when you want to keep your review checklist visible and at the same time work your way through your lists. In Things for Mac, you can now open as many app windows as you need. Here’s how:

  • Click the button in the upper right corner.
  • Use the keyboard shortcut ⌘ Cmd + Ctrl + N.
  • Right-click on a to-do & hold down ⌥ Opt before clicking Show in Project to open the project in a new window.

Every Things window can, of course, show a different list and you can drag and drop to-dos between each window.
