How to Revert to Things 2 Sync

Last Updated: Nov 08, 2017 10:25AM CET

Here’s how to go back to Things 2 after updating your Things Cloud account for Things 3.

Things 3 and Things 2 cannot sync with each other. This is because Things 3 has new features which are not available in the older version. If you upgrade one device to Things 3, you’ll need to upgrade your other devices as well.

If you’ve been testing out Things 3 but now want to go back to Things 2, you can, but any changes you made while using Things 3 will not be available when you go back to the old version.

You can only go back to the Things 2 sync if your Things 2 data is still stored on your Mac, iPhone, or iPad.

Reverting to Things 2 Sync

Following the steps below, you will overwrite your Things 3 data in the cloud by uploading your Things 2 data to replace it. Before you do this, you need to decide which device to restore your Things 2 data from – preferably whichever device has the latest version of your Things 2 data.

Mac

If you’ve decided to restore your Things 2 data from a Mac, follow these steps:

  1. Open Things 3 on every device where you’ve installed it, go into the Settings, and disable Things Cloud.
  2. On your Mac, open Things 2.
  3. You might see the warning Syncing with Things Cloud is disabled. Confirm this message by clicking Ok.
  4. In the menu bar at the top of your screen, click Things > Preferences > Things Cloud.
  5. Click the switch for Things Cloud to turn it ON.
  6. Click Log In.
  7. Enter the email address and password for your Things Cloud account.
  8. Click Continue.
  9. When asked how to proceed, you must select the last option: Keep only to-dos from this Mac. This will upload the to-dos from your Mac to Things Cloud (it could take awhile depending on the size of your database and the speed of your connection).
  10. Once it has finished, open Things 2 on your other devices and log into your Things Cloud account there. If prompted on those devices, choose Keep only the to-dos from Things Cloud.
iPad

If you’ve decided to restore your Things 2 data from an iPad, follow these steps:

  1. Open Things 3 on every device where you’ve installed it, go into the Settings, and disable Things Cloud.
  2. On your iPad, open Things 2.
  3. You might see the warning Syncing with Things Cloud is disabled. Confirm this message by tapping Ok.
  4. Hold your iPad sideways to reveal your lists, then tap > Things Cloud.
  5. Tap the switch for Things Cloud to turn it ON.
  6. Tap Log In.
  7. Enter the email address and password for your Things Cloud account.
  8. Tap Continue.
  9. When asked how to proceed, you must select the last option: Keep only to-dos from this iPad. This will upload the to-dos from your iPad to Things Cloud (it could take awhile depending on the size of your database and the speed of your connection).
  10. Once it has finished, open Things 2 on your other devices and log into your Things Cloud account there. If prompted on those devices, choose Keep only the to-dos from Things Cloud.
iPhone

If you’ve decided to restore your Things 2 data from an iPhone, follow these steps:

  1. Open Things 3 on every device where you’ve installed it, go into the Settings, and disable Things Cloud.
  2. On your iPhone, open Things 2.
  3. You might see the warning Syncing with Things Cloud is disabled. Confirm this message by tapping Ok.
  4. In the main Lists view, tap > Things Cloud.
  5. Tap the switch for Things Cloud to turn it ON.
  6. Tap Log In.
  7. Enter the email address and password for your Things Cloud account.
  8. Tap Continue.
  9. When asked how to proceed, you must select the last option: Keep only to-dos from this iPhone. This will upload the to-dos from your iPhone to Things Cloud (it could take awhile depending on the size of your database and the speed of your connection).
  10. Once it has finished, open Things 2 on your other devices and log into your Things Cloud account there. If prompted on those devices, choose Keep only the to-dos from Things Cloud.

Please note that if you log into your Things Cloud account from Things 3 again, it will be automatically upgraded to work with Things 3, and Things 2 will stop syncing with it.
