Triggering Updates

Here are all of the actions that automatically trigger an update with Things Cloud.

Once you’ve created a Things Cloud account, Things will update your to-dos across all your devices for you via our Push service. Every time you change something on one device, it is immediately sent to Things Cloud, which then sends it to all your other devices. And since it’s automatic, you’ll never have to worry about it.

For reference, here’s a list of all the actions that Things uses to automatically update trigger these updates:

Mac
  • Launching Things after it’s been closed
  • Creating, editing, or moving a to-do, project, area, or tag
  • Closing the Things window
  • Opening the Things window after it’s been closed or hidden
  • Switching away from Things to another app
  • Switching back to Things from another app
  • Reconnecting to the internet while Things is running
  • Returning to your Mac after it’s been idle with Things running
  • Waking your Mac from sleep if Things was running when your Mac went to sleep
  • Moving to-dos or projects from the Daily Review
  • Going to the menu bar at the top of your screen and clicking File > Update with Things Cloud
  • Making a change in Things on another device that’s on the same network as your Mac
iPad
  • Launching Things from your iPad’s Home screen
  • Creating, editing, or moving a to-do, project, area, or tag
  • Switching back to Things from another app
  • Hiding Apple’s Notification Center or Control Center after showing it while Things is open
  • Reconnecting to the internet while Things is open
  • Waking your iPad with the Sleep/Wake button if Things was open when your iPad went to sleep
  • Unlocking your iPad if Things was open when your iPad was locked
  • Moving to-dos or projects from the Daily Review
  • While holding your iPad sideways, tapping Last Updated: below your lists
  • Making a change in Things on another device that’s on the same network as your iPad
iPhone
  • Launching Things from your iPhone’s Home screen
  • Creating, editing, or moving a to-do, project, area, or tag
  • Switching back to Things from another app
  • Hiding Apple’s Notification Center or Control Center after showing it while Things is open
  • Reconnecting to the internet while Things is open
  • Waking your iPhone with the Sleep/Wake button if Things was open when your iPhone went to sleep
  • Unlocking your iPhone if Things was open when your iPhone was locked
  • Moving to-dos or projects from the Daily Review
  • In the main Listsview, tapping Last Updated: below your lists
  • Making a change in Things on another device that’s on the same network as your iPhone

If you’re logged into Things Cloud in Things for iPhone, any change that you make in Things for Apple Watch will trigger a Things Cloud update.

If these actions don’t trigger a Things Cloud update, try these troubleshooting steps.
