Learn how to use Quick Find to quickly switch lists, find to-dos, and search for tags.

Quick Find is a brilliant new feature that combines navigation and search into a single function. Here’s how to use it.

Search with Quick Find

It’s never been easier to do a search in Things, no matter where you are in the apps.

Mac

On your Mac, you no longer have to invoke a special search function. Instead, thanks to Type Travel, you can just start typing what you are looking for and see results instantly.

  1. On your Mac, open Things.
  2. Start typing to initiate a search.
iPad

On your iPad, you can access Quick Find from anywhere inside the app:

  1. On your iPad, open Things.
  2. Pull down in any list to reveal Quick Find.
  3. Start typing to initiate a search.
iPhone

On your iPhone, you can access Quick Find from anywhere inside the app:

  1. On your iPhone, open Things.
  2. Pull down in any list to reveal Quick Find.
  3. Start typing to initiate a search.

When you initiate a search, you will immediately see suggestions based on what you have typed so far. The icons in front of the search results will indicate whether the match is a regular to-do, Project, Area, or Tag.

If you don’t see your desired result in the suggestions, hit Continue Search to see a list of all search results.

If you like to use Things mainly from your keyboard, or don’t want to swipe back and forth on iOS, switching lists is as easy as typing the name of a list – no matter if it’s any of the default lists, or a project or area that you’ve created yourself.

Switching to a list works the same as initiating a search, but instead of typing a search term, you type the name of your destination. Here are some examples of how you can use it:

  • ”tod” = Today
  • ”upc” = Upcoming
  • ”finan” = Finances if you have an area for your finances
  • ”rome” = Vacation in Rome if you plan on visiting this city

Tip: You can also use this feature when moving to-dos between lists. It helps to quickly filter results. On the Mac, just start typing after clicking in the toolbar; on iOS, pull down in the Move popover to reveal the search.
