Using Contacts

Last Updated: Oct 22, 2014 09:39PM CEST

This page explains how the Contacts feature in Things works and how to best use it.

The Contacts feature allows you to add people from the Contacts app on your Mac to the sidebar in Things, and is a place to keep track of tasks that you have other people doing.

A to-do can only be assigned to a contact on the Mac, but once you’ve done that, the contact’s name will also show inside of that to-do on your iPad or iPhone.

Assigning a to-do to a contact in Things does not send that person any information – only you can see what to-dos you’ve assigned to them. For more on collaborating with others, please see this page.

Adding a To-Do to a Contact

Mac

You can create a Contact list in Things on your Mac and then add to-dos to that list. Here’s how:

  1. In Things on your Mac, go to the bottom left corner of the window and click + > Add Contact….
  2. Choose a contact (if you don’t see your contacts, read this).
  3. Click OK.
  4. The contact’s name should now show in the sidebar.
  5. Now select a to-do and simply drag it onto a the contact’s name.

Now, when you mark these items for Today, the contact’s name will show on the to-do to help you keep track of who is responsible for that item.

iPad

You can’t assign a to-do to a contact directly on your iPad. However, once you’ve assigned a to-do to a contact in Things on your Mac, the contact’s name will also show inside of that to-do in Things on your iPad.

You can’t assign a to-do to a contact directly on your iPhone. However, once you’ve assigned a to-do to a contact in Things on your Mac, the contact’s name will also show inside of that to-do in Things on your iPhone.
