Restoring From a Backup

Here’s how to restore backups of your to-dos to Things.

These instructions are for our deprecated Things 2 version.

Mac

If you are storing your to-dos in Things Cloud, it’s easy to get them back.

Restoring To-Dos From an Automatic Backup

Things for Mac backs up your to-dos every 24 hours while it’s running. Here’s how to restore a previous version of your data:

Restoring your to-dos from a backup will replace all your current data. It’s not possible to restore just one particular task, project, or area.

  1. Disconnect your Mac from the internet.
  2. Quit Things on your Mac.
  3. Click the Finder in your Dock.
  4. Go to the menu bar at the top of your screen and click Go > Go to Folder….
  5. Copy and paste the following path and click Go: ~/Library/Containers/com.culturedcode.things/Data/Library/Application Support/Cultured Code/Things/
  6. Rename ThingsLibrary.db to ThingsLibrary.db.old
  7. Go into the /Backups folder.
  8. Find the backup you’d like to use and select it. The file name of the backup includes the date it was created.
  9. Copy the backup by hitting ⌘ Cmd + C.
  10. Go back by clicking the ◀︎ Back button in the top-left corner of the Finder window.
  11. Paste the backup file by hitting ⌘ Cmd + V.
  12. Rename the backup to ThingsLibrary.db
  13. Launch Things. Your backed up data should be visible.
  14. Navigate to the menu bar and click Things > Preferences….
  15. Click the Things Cloud tab.
  16. If Things Cloud is on, turn it OFF by clicking the switch.
  17. Reconnect your Mac to the internet.
  18. If you were using Things Cloud, turn it back on.
iPad

If you are storing your to-dos in Things Cloud, it’s easy to get them back.

Things for iPad doesn’t create automatic backups for you like Things for Mac does.

iPhone
