Legacy Bonjour Sync

Last Updated: May 08, 2014 08:00PM CEST

Bonjour Sync refers to the way Things 1 used to sync to-dos between clients over a local area network. This functionality has been deprecated by the release of Things 2, which uses Things Cloud instead.

If you cannot use Things Cloud and rely on the old Bonjour Sync, you can revert to Things version 1, as explained below. Please note that Things version 1 will not be receiving software updates in future.

If you've run Things 2 on any of your devices and made changes to your to-dos, those changes will not appear if you revert to Things 1 with Legacy Sync.

Things for Mac with Legacy Sync

This information only applies to users running Mac OS X 10.6, 10.7 or 10.8. If you are running an older version of Mac OS X (how to check), you should still be on Things Mac 1.5 and you can just skip to the iOS guidance below.

If you purchased Things Mac directly from Cultured Code:

If you did not buy Things from the Mac App Store, download Things 1.5 with Legacy Sync and then use your license to activate the software – you may then need to reconnect the app to your database:

  1. Press & hold the Option key while starting Things – it will prompt you to choose the location of the database file.
  2. Choose: /Users/<your_username>/Library/Containers/com.culturedcode.things/Data/Library/Application Support/Cultured Code/Things/ (the database file will be greyed out, you need only choose the containing folder)
  3. If your database is not found at the above path, try this path instead: /Users/<your_username>/Library/Application Support/Cultured Code/Things/

If you cannot see your Library folder, please view this page.

If you purchased Things Mac from the Mac App Store:

This type of purchase does not have a traditional software license associated with it. So, to install a legacy version, follow the below steps using the most recent version of Things from the Mac App Store (Things 2):

  1. Hold down the Option key and click the Things menu (Option must be pressed before clicking the menu).
  2. Click the option to Install Things 1.5 with Legacy Sync.
  3. This will license your machine and bring you back to this page.
  4. Now download Things 1.5 with Legacy Sync and it should be licensed to run on your machine.
  5. Press & hold the Option key while starting Things – it will prompt you to choose the location of the database file.
  6. Choose: /Users/<your_username>/Library/Containers/com.culturedcode.things/Data/Library/Application Support/Cultured Code/Things/
  7. If your database is not found at the above path, try this path instead: /Users/<your_username>/Library/Application Support/Cultured Code/Things/

If you cannot see your Library folder, please view this page.
